The Deadly Hurricane

As people in the Gulf Coast try to recover another hurricane is coming. Hurricane Rita is a category 5. Which means Rita is as strong as can be . More than 1,000 people have been ordered to evacuate in Texas and Louisiana. Officials have sent food, water, and troops to the effected areas.

For the second time residents in New Orleans must prepare them self and evacuate before the hurricane hits. Many are Katrina survivors that are still in shelters. Last time New Orleans was drowned under sea water because the levees broke. Now they're fixing them, but they have only been able to make them withstand 6 inches of rain. To me they just wasted their time because they're probably going to brake.

Experts think Rita will hit Friday or Saturday morning. On Wednesday Rita was in the Gulf of Mexico with winds of 165 mph. Hurricane Katrina which killed over 1,000 people was a category 4 when it hit land. On Tuesday Rita hit the Florida Keys. It didn't do much damage because it hadn't gained much strentgh. What would you do to help?

The Not Fun Test

Why do we have to take so many test? It just takes time out of our learning time because the test doesn't teach us anything ,but classes do. Also we have to wait like 3 hours sitting down. That isn't fun because some stuff the teachers haven't taught us yet. So if we don't do good because we don't know some things yet we may not pass grade. So don't make us take test until the very end of school.

School After Hurricane Katrina

For the first time after Hurricane Katrina hit classes have resumed in Louisiana State University. With campuses home to an additional 2,300 students. Those students were displaced from other  colleges in New Orleans and the surrounding area. With flags flying at half stance and ambulances racing trow streets to get help to people. Evidence can still be seen that the storm was there.

Also the campus is trying its best to manage and house the country's biggest field hospital. There also housing the displaced students. About 2,000 LSU students volunteered to help at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, where the school's basketball team typical held their games. It was convicted 8 days ago make shift hospital that serves as the first stop for evacuees needing medical attention.

Inside evacuees arrive at center from New Orleans , about 80 miles southeast of Baton Rouge. They get they're by alot of different ways. Helicopters land behind the center. Some wait a couple of hours ,but some wait at least a day or two. If you were there what would do to help.

Hurricane Katrina

On August 27, 2005 Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast with winds of 145 mph.  More than 1 million people left their homes before it hit in New Orleans Monday morning.  Another 10,000 took shelter at the superdome.  Heavy rains hit ports in Louisana, Alabama, and Mississippi.  About 70 people died because of the storm in Gulfport and Biloxi areas of Mississippi.  Also more than 750,000 had no power.  The rain left whole streets of homes in New Orleans, Louisana flooded up to the rooftops!  Windows were blown out, boats were found on land, and signs were mangled.  Katrina made 2 holes on the superdome which was a shelter for people.  When it hit the Gulf it was a category 5 with winds of 160 mph.  Later it decreased to a category 4 with winds of 135 mph.  By 1:00 pm it was a category 3.  Most of Louisana is below sea level so in some place they're about 20 feet under water.

Only 3 other category 5 hurricanes have hit U.S.A. since records have been kept.  The first to hit was not named.  It hit on Labor Day 1935.  The second hurricane Comille which killed 265 people hit the Gulf Coast.  The third Hurricane Andrew hit Florida in 1992.  It was the most costful.  It did $26.5 billion in damage.

Even though New Orleans was spared a direct hit, the damage was still devasting.  2 levees broke making New Orleans 80% under water.  Most of the water is contaminated and power may be off for weeks.  The government sent baby formula, water, ice, equipment, communicators, and generators.  Just think how they are feeling now.  How would you feel?
