In The Zone

E30segHave you ever wondered if you are exercising at their correct intensity? Perhaps you have just wanted to know if you are getting enough exercise.  Well, I've got some great news for you! This week we will be working with the heart rate monitors and discussing target zone or training zone

Target zone (or training zone) refer to the magic range of numbers at which you will get the greatest benefits from your work-out.  The boys and girls of JHH are extremely lucky because they use heart rate monitors to help them monitor the intensity of their activity level while in P.E.  Best of all, the heart rate monitors have an audible alarm that alerts them if they need to increase or decrease their heart rate.  Our heart rate monitors are programed from a target zone of 135 to 180 beats/minute.

During class when you are wearing the heart rate monitors we will take part in a wide variety of activities in which you should be able to get your heart rate into your zone.  Your goal will be to get 20 minutes in your target zone in a class.  I know you will all be able to attain this goal, but it will take some work on your part.  It is important to remember that there is more than one way to get the exercise you need and that any form of exercise is better than being sedentary.

148100_large_1To help motivate you get moving in your target zone you will have an opportunity to earn a shoe (to go along with your feet) when you accumulate 60 minutes in your zone.  Why 60 minutes?  Well, research has shown that boys & girls your age need at least 60 minutes of exercise or activity a day.  So that means you should be outside playing when you get home instead of watching TV or playing video games!  P.E. class IS NOT the only time you should be moving.

Foot Epidemic

Something strange is going on down here.Feet_002_1

The students at House began the school year with two feet & that seemed normal to me.  But now many of those same boys and girls have three, four or even five feet!  And I couldn't be happier!

It means that you've been working hard and pushing yourself in class to get the steps you need.  I am so proud of all the boys and girls at House.

In fact, I thought it would be interesting to see exactly how many feet I have given out.  So guess what?  I looked at EVERY class list and counted all the feet that had been awarded.

Feet_001Are you ready for this?  The students at House have EARNED 749 feet!  That is a ton of feet.  I'm no math wizard.  It took me a long time to count up those feet!  But now I'm wondering...How many steps did it take to get that many feet?  How many feet do you think the school will earn by the end of the year?
