Recovery in Guatemala

Hurricane Stan pounded Central America and Mexico last week. Sadly, the hurricane hit while Guatemala was in a rainy season. The hurricane caused heavy rain, terrible flooding, and mudslides. One thousand people were killed. Hundreds more of people are still missing.

Floods and mudslides happened when Stan buried parts of Guatemala. They cut off villages getting help. Boats and helicopters are finally bringing much needed relief to Guatemalans. Two hundred schools were ruined and 50 percent of the country's crops were destroyed.

Virgilio Perez, a 23-year-old farmer, said he was afraid to live there now. He is one of the residents that hopes to move to safer land. Most farmers will not be able to afford new land to grow new crops.

Flooding and mudslides killed more than 130 people in El Salvador, Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras. More than 500,000 people were left homeless from southern Mexico to El Salvador.

I am glad that people are trying to help other people locate new homes.

What do you think of the disaster in Guatemala?

Familys

I am writing for who I care about. I care about my family. My family are the most important people in my life.I really love my family because they are always with me if I feel sad. I might be sad because i might be board and not have anything to do. Or maybe I'm sad because I am all alone.

When I am sick my family is always their for me. sometimes I get sick because of what is in the air. Or I can also get sick if one of my friends is sick. Mostly I don't get that sick but sometimes I do. I don't really like to get sick because I don't like how it feels when I am sick.

I have two brothers and no sisters. My family is fun and they are also funny. They are nice too. Sometimes I may get mad at them but that does not mean that I don't love them anymore. I will never forget my family. I am really glad that I have a family like this. Sometimes we may get mad at each other but we will never do anything that would hurt our feelings. No matter what I will always love my family. Even if they don't get me everything I want. I think that everyone should say that they really care about their family. Your family will always love you no matter what happens.

If you were to say who do you care most about what would you say?

New Park

On October 11, 2005 at 4:00 they opened a park in front of my house. Their was a lot of people their when I went. When I got to the park their was a lot of kids playing on the playground. All I did at the park was take care of my mom's friends babies because I love babies and I also was watching people play soccer. Then I went to the park again and I watched the boys play soccer they were not playing rough soccer they were playing fair. Then everyone went back to the park and they all got on a ride. Even big kids got on the playground too. If you go to that park you will have fun but sometimes you can get board because their is a lot of people their waiting to get on the rides. When I went to the park it was when I finished my homework. I was one of the last people to leave from the park. I left with my brother at 8:00 p.m. People thirteen and under can go play on the playground. I hope that the people that have gone to this park have had fun.

Do you think that you will ever have a chance to go to this park one day?

Going Back to the Moon

The last time a spacecraft landed on the moon was in 1972.  Fast forward to the year 2018, when the next lunar landing is scheduled.  By then, NASA has planned to get humans safely back to the moon.  Michael Griffin, the head of NASA, said it is important to investigate in space travel, even if the nation struggles to rebuild after hurricane Katrina and deals with other problems.  The crew vehicle project will cost more than $104 billion over the next ten years.  The new crew vehicle design will use the best technology and design from both the Apollo and the space shuttle.  Apollo II was the first spacecraft to travel to the moon.  In addition to the lunar travel, the spacecraft will also be designed to travel to Mars and the International Space Station.  The new plan will have astrounauts on the moon for a week, which is more than the Apollo missions.  The new space vehicle is designed to carry four people to the moon.  It can also carry more supplies than other spacecrafts.  Eventually, the craft will make two missions to the moon each year.  The goal is to create a permanent station on the moon where crews will stay and work for six months at a time.  The lunar station will be similar to the International Space Station.  On July 20, 1989, Apollo II astronuat Neil Armstrong did what no other human has ever done.  Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon.  He was soon followed by astronaut Buzz Aldrin.  Moments after his first step, Armstrong said the now famous words, "That's on small step for a man, one giant step for mankind."

I think that it is fine that no one has gone to the moon since 1972.  But I also think that they should go one day to investigate more of what is happening.

Do you think that astronauts will soon go to the moon?

Sky High Prices

What's driving up gas prices?

When artist McCullough went to the gas station in Wolfboro, New Hampshire he blinked because the prices of gas were $1.36 and now the price is $1.49.  Senator Bob Dole says the high prices are partly President Bill Clinton's fault.  High gas prices may one good effect, people may drive less and that means less population.

Relief from the Painful Price of Fuel

The price of oil is really high and people around the world are feeling the pinch at the gas pump.  The president wants to help the American people have enough heat in their homes.

Fired up over fuels prices.

More than half of London's gas stations are out of gas.  Scotland and France gas is also in short supply.  Many gas stations are closed and causing problems for people who get to work on cars or buses.  Gas in Britian costs about $4.31 a gallon that is more than any other country in Europe.  Britian is not the only country that has citizens angered by high prices.
